Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a pre-fab coop! Please spend some time reading the higher rated coop build articles and comments with them so you can develop a good design.

Breeds to consider for cold climates are Chanteclers, Easter Eggers (not really a breed!), Ameraucanas, Brahmas, Buckeyes, Dominiques and Wyandottes. All these breeds are small combs and good body size. There are other good cold weather breeds with single combs but if you want a rooster, you want to avoid single comb breeds as their combs don't shrink down during winter months leaving them much more prone to frostbite damage than single combed hens.

Hoping to get chickens soon. A bit nervous about it but also excited. From Minnesota so am researching how to have chickens in the northland and best breeds.
Welcome and I wish you the best of luck friend 😊. If you have any questions we would all be more than happy to help. I know you want chickens but Welsh Harlequin ducks are beautiful super nice and great with cold areas. Loads of people even have them in Canada! 🦆🐔❤️.
