HI,

I'm in CA and currently we are having a big issue with New Castle disease. I want to add to my chicken flock but I don't want to introduce birds from another flock in case they are infected.

Is it safe for me to purchase fertile eggs and hatch them at home? Can Newcastle be spread to the chicks inside the eggs if they come from a farm that is infected?

thanks.

Wish I could tell you the answer to that. All I could find so far is that Newcastle can be spread through egg shells. Didn't say anything about the chicks inside. Just knowing it could be spread through the shells would make me pretty cautious though. Don't how disinfecting the shell of a fertile egg would affect the hatchability of the chick. Hope some one will be able to answer you better.
Bonnie.

I haven't heard anything from 'The Front' lately, are they still taking everyones chickens and killing them even if they test negative? Scary stuff. This could happen anywhere. I feel really bad for everyone who lost their babies!

Someone irresponsibly took a maybe infected chicken to San Diego County (Ramona area) and they had to extend the quarantine just as they were about to lift it. As I understand it, CDA is now purging birds there. I can’t believe someone would be that dumb or selfish.

The lawsuit group is still soliciting donations for their attorney but I don’t know the status of that lawsuit.
