Due to the threat to the poultry industry in California, the California Department of Food and Agriculture recommended that the San Mateo County Fair suspend its poultry show for the 2019 fair season, according to San Mateo County Fair officials.

“Our Board will work with the local 4-H and FFA representatives to coordinate a bird-less poultry exhibit for the 2019 fair,” said Justin Aquino, manager of the San Mateo County Fair. “We will encourage students to participate in an educational display to educate fairgoers about the poultry industry.”

Humboldt has canceled. So has Sonoma County. Monterey will decide by June. Looks like Contra Costa will still have poultry pens.

So for those who don't orient Bay Area, what this means is that an owner with a rooster from Alameda County took it to a San Mateo vet, where it was dx'd/reported with Newcastle. As a result, most places are pulling ALL poultry exhibits except the county the chicken lived in and the next county over.

Attention: Residents in Areas of Active vND Virus Spread

Message from State Veterinarian, Dr. Annette Jones
Due to progression and duration of a virulent Newcastle Disease (vND) outbreak in parts of Southern California, the State Veterinarian has ordered that all poultry* epidemiologically associated (connected) with diseased birds are humanely euthanized. The most heavily impacted neighborhoods are within or near:

  • Compton and Whittier (Los Angeles County)
  • Eastvale, Menifee, Mira Loma/Jurupa Valley, Norco, Nuevo, Perris, and Riverside City (Riverside County)
  • Chino, Fontana, Hesperia, Highland, Muscoy, and Ontario (San Bernardino County)
Unfortunately, even individual birds and flocks that previously tested negative, but later become exposed to the disease, must be euthanized. USDA/CDFA staff will contact affected bird owners with orders specific to their property.

While this action is difficult for all involved, it MUST be done to eradicate VND. Otherwise, the disease will continue to spread and kill additional flocks.

There was one infected rooster in Hayward (Alameda County) that got seen in San Mateo County across the bay.

The "quasi-quarantine" since then has been ridiculous.

San Mateo has banned poultry from its county fair this year. So has El Dorado (three hours away), Humboldt (four hours away). BUT Alameda (the county the rooster was in) and neighboring Contra Costa and Marin have not.
