Newcastle in Utah and California

Yah you are right...that is misleading! Why would they do that? To avoid panic?
I don't know. But it explains why there was so much confusion. It sounded like there were 3 new cases: one in Redwood City (the vet clinic that diagnosed the bird), one in Tracy (where the bird was), and one in Fremont (city in Alameda where the guy lived). But it was all the same incident: one bird, one guy.

Also, this came via email from a local store. I’m glad word is spreading.

IMPORTANT NEWS
On March 14th it was confirmed positive that a chicken brought into a veterinarians office in Redwood City died from Newcastle disease.

Some of you may already be aware of the recent outbreak and spreading in Southern California of virulent Newcastle Disease in chickens. If you know what happened there then you will understand why it is so important to be pro-active.

It is crucial that ALL people encountering chickens be diligent about disinfecting and not spreading this disease. Some local veterinarians have even decided not to accept any chickens for any reason.

cHICK n bEES is doing our part by placing proper bio security measures at the entrance to our store. We ask that anyone having any contact with chickens cooperate by using a disinfectant before entering. We will have a disinfecting mat and hand sanitizer available prior to entering.

Please take the necessary precautions to keep your birds safe as well. Not only can it be tracked in on your feet it can be picked up on your tires. We are being told by UC Davis that Lysol works very well at killing this virus.

For any of you that are interested in purchasing chicks or chickens please be extremely careful where they are coming from. This being said, cHICK n bEES will have chicks for sale next week in our store. They are coming from out of state directly to our store. Precautions and bio security measures will be taken in our store to limit handling of the chicks and they will not be allowed on the floor.

Below are a couple of links to more information regarding this disease and what you can do to help stop the spread.

I was set to pick up my chicks from a local breeder today and he canceled on me last minute. He informed me that San Diego has been under quarantine since yesterday (Friday, March 15th) that no one can mail or transport any chickens in these area codes 90000-93599, unfortunately that includes my area code. I read that by law there is a mandatory euthanization of areas that have the virus and pray the state doesn't force us to do the same in San Diego. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their flocks and family businesses because of the Newcastle disease outbreak.

I don't think it is true that San Diego itself is under quarantine, but rather that any shipment to SD has to pass through a post office distribution center that is within the quarantine. They call that a "no-mail zone." Metzer Farms has a good explanation on their website (linked below). If your breeder is not in a quarantine zone and you are not in a quarantine zone, you are allowed to drive there and pick them up, so long you don't have to rive through a quarantine zone to get there. That being said, it may make sense to let things settle down before adding more chicks to your flock right now.

PHOENIX – Virulent Newcastle disease has been found in an Arizona chicken flock for the first time since the outbreak began last year in California.

It’s been found in Arizona near Flagstaff in a backyard flock of eight birds, and tests show the strain is part of the Southern California outbreak.

Arizona state veterinarian Peter Mundschenk said the Department of Agriculture is working to find the source and keep it contained.

“It’s pretty much been in backyard birds, but they’ve had a couple spillovers into the commercial flocks in the areas,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to prevent by having the surveillance zone so we don’t get the spread of the disease like California’s had.”

Mundschenk said they will keep looking in a 1 kilometer area around where the disease was found to locate the source. One source could be a chicken keeper – someone trying to protect birds from quarantine in California – who brought them to Arizona, Mundschenk said....https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2019...czRgoPFBbFT7DtN2HYLNUeQkXxUk1in7ynw8JSWvkP_sc

Yes, I read about that a few week's ago. We seem to be having a few from California that are moving out of there to Arizona, and they probably moved their bird's with them. That's why in me trying to start up on Silkie's and the Showgirl's now, I am looking to the East of me for them.
