Welcome to BYC. You've come to the right place for chicken information! You can ask questions in the forums or use the search button to find information already here.

First things being first, I would say building or buying a coop should be top priority, and also getting supplies like feeders and waterers. I would look around and see which breeds do well for other chicken owners in your area before settling on breeds. Silkies make good pets and should do well in Oklahoma heat. Layers are more tricky, because the really friendly ones tend not to do well in heat. You will just have to do some research.

Hi, it's nice to have you here!

I've never had Silkies but have raised Speckled Sussex when we lived in Florida and they did quite well for me. They're beautiful, friendly and good layers.

Pork Pie has given you a link to your state thread, I'd recommend chatting with them to see what they prefer.

Best of luck to you & congrats on your upcoming move to the country!

Thank you for your time and help! The property has a barn and a few chicken coops so we are planing on cleaning everything and adapting it so we can keep the chickens in the barn to add and extra layer of protection against predators. We are thinking of waiting until spring to get chicks but we’d also like to buy them from farms instead of online to avoid making our chicks stressed and or sick from the trip. I will look into finding people around this area to ask about breeds. Thank you soo much!!!

Sounds like you have a good plan of action, then. I'm reading some other posts that say Sussex do just fine for them in hot weather, so they may indeed be a good breed for you!

Thank you! I have read that they are somewhat heat hardy but I will surely ask around to make sure they will be comfortable in Oklahoma :) thank you for all your help!
