Hi, I'm new to chickens. Got my first flock last spring. I'm very rural, and no pourtry vets around. I joined backyard chickens because I need advice and also to share my flock.
Unfortunately, I just lost 2 hens. I had my core flock then last November purchased 5 hens from a breeder. I realize howuch I didn't know. Their farm was spectacular, the coops were like custom tree houses, premises was very very clean, so I thought. One hen I had to rush to my local vet who are large animal, but have some experience with poultry, it was advised I euthanize hen, I returned her, informed breeder what bet said and that I had already started a general antibiotic treatment for my flock. Not a single one exhibited any signs of illness, until 2 weeks ago. Got a batril ink for a hen that was gurgling, but 5 days later no improvement, then a another hen that came from the 5 seemed I'll. My vet said there was nothing else he could do, and advised me to contact the AG dept. They were very helpful, but that requires me to release the 2 hens for necropsy. The red hen must of been poorly from the start, she had lost of tumors and I forget the name but she also had egg yolk in her abdomen? But was laying daily up until baytril inj. All other hydrology and bacteriology was neg but pos for coccidia and hair worms? Other flockembers have text book poop, But, the other hen tested positive for MS. I was advised that I could euthanize all and start fresh, or observe for 90 days, and since they are stirctly pets and eggers, I'm observing 90 days. I do not live anywhere near a factory. If my flock stays healthy after 90 days, the University can come over, examine and do various tests, and if all's good, will be banded by them. I've already found info on the Corid TX on this site and will start that as a preventative and TX for anyone who may have DA that I've not noticed. I will be bleaching my food stations. I also always bleach my feeders and wAter when cleaning. Anyway, I know this is alot for an introduction, but this new problem has been very stressful. I feel I failed them not knowing what to ask when bringing in new chickens, other thAn I did ISO them.
The poultry supervisor did say, it could of been dormant then this recent heat wave stressed them out and that a large number of backyard chickens have MS. This is two of the November 5. One I returned at the start that was sick, one I lost to a predator, and the remaining one exhibiting ZERO symptoms as well as my original core.
I'm very much in need of any advice regarding my current situation.
Thank you.
I also posted pictures of a Bantam Cochin roo I have whose legs have some issues
