Hi there, i have a problem with my wee hen...,big bulge at her vent....and came across all the advice on here. I have tried everything and now about to go to the vet with her. Great site with great info from everyone

Could she have prolapse? Caused from a stuck egg or too much forcing to get the egg out. Her insides will look like they are coming out or are out. If this is the case, you can keep her inside under some heat, in a low lighted place of only 8 hours of daylight so she doesn't lay and rub some preperation H on the swollen area to reduce the swelling and allow healing. Keep her quiet for a week or too until it heals. If it is really sticking out, don't leave her in the coop with the other birds as they can peck her butt and kill her. Chickens see red skin and they can literally eat a chicken to death.

But you might want to post this question in our emergency section and include some pics so we can see what it actually looks like....

Good luck with your hen. I hope she makes a full recovery.

Thanks. I took her to the vet and as I suspected, she was eggbound. Had to have her put to sleep. Poor wee thing.

I am so so sorry about your baby. I hope your heart can heal soon.

Make sure to keep oyster shell available at all times and keep it near the food and water. Chickens won't go looking for it but will readily eat it if it is in their faces. Also water. If they get dehydrated and also don't have oyster shell, these two things can cause egg binding.

I am so sorry.
