Helen had gone missing and I found her broody in an old spare tire a few days ago.

Just in time, too!

How fun! Watching the moms take care of chicks is the best.

Glad you found her. Hens from my childhood would always try to hide their clutches, and usually got picked off by raccoons.

Occasionally one would emerge from the blackberries with a whole mob of fluffy babies, and then it was a race to keep them away from the dogs! The dogs were great with the chickens, but for some reason thought fluffy baby chicks were hors d'oeurves!!!

Helen is my 6th broody gal this year! I was sooo surprised because she is only 5 1/2 months old and just started laying a couple of weeks ago.

I had 12 live hatches, but sadly, lost two chicks to drowning (I have ducks, too, and somehow these two chicks, from different Moms, but about the same age, found their way into one of the tubs I keep out there for the ducks----totally MY fault; I was devastated).

I can't wait to see how many Helen hatches. Now that the first one has come, I am constantly checking on her!

Nothing all day yesterday... So I go out there this morning....not a peep or a cheep. I figure everyone is still asleep...yeah I'm not just "up with the chickens", I'm up before them!

I see an empty shell....someone has been born! I wait.

Not just someone...someone"S"!!!!

I am tickled every shade of pink!

Maternity ward will be finished by tomorrow morning. I started building it when Maxine went broody, and then Juliet went broody, then Patty, Jackie, and Grace....Goodness! How big did I need to make this ward?!? No matter, none of them ever used it, but I think Helen will want to. I'll post pics. It will be lovely.

All my broody girls had a clutch of at least 12-15. Maxine hatched 2. Juliet hatched 2. Patty hatched 4. Jackie hatched 3. Grace hatched 1.

BUT MY HELEN......GOOD GRIEF! NINE! Nine and counting........

By the way,

she got a special yogurt treat today.....
and she shared it with her first born!
