Hi everyone! I joined about a month ago when I needed assistance hatching my call duck. Since I've made a few posts for help but haven't properly introduced myself, so here I am lol! My name is Kristen and I live in upstate NY, just south of Rochester.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I received my current flock as day old chicks from McMurray hatchery back in 2019. Previously, I hatched and kept Pekin ducks growing up. In college, I studied poultry raising and maintenance (which was basically a class where we got to hatch and raise chickens and turkeys for a semester!)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have 8 chickens total- 1 rooster, 5 hens, and two of their chicks. I also have 2 call ducklings.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have an olive egger roo, a cuckoo marans hen, Egyptian Fayoumi hen, 2 Ameraucana hens, a Golden laced wyandotte, an Ameraucana/olive egger chick and cuckoo maran/olive egger chick (sexes TBD)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

The eggs for one thing! I do a lot of cooking and baking so having lots of eggs from my own flock is extremely rewarding. I also love hanging out with my flock-they are so fun to watch and make me laugh daily with their antics.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I mountain bike, run, snowboard, hunt, horseback ride, hike, camp, bake, cook and read. I like to be outdoors or with my animals as much as possible :)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am married to a VERY tolerant man lol-aside from my chickens and ducks I have five cats and two dogs. I currently work part time from home and get to spend a lot of time with my animals as a result... Something I'm extremely blessed and grateful to be able to do. I also foster cats, volunteer at an animal shelter, and am a regular platelet donor to help people with cancer. We are buying our own home within the next year, and that will enable me to get into more breeding, showing and some small scale sales of call ducks and heritage breed chickens. And I'd like to finally add some silkie hens to my flock!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC after some googling when I
was having trouble with a call duck hatch. Since I have read many threads here and have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about all the aspects involved in raising and keeping poultry. Everyone here is friendly and helpful, which is so rare on other platforms nowadays. Thanks for having me!
