Hello everyone,
I’ve been lurking here for several months, but now I actually have a reason to join. My family and I just got our first chicks about three weeks ago. We’ve been meaning to get chickens for about six years, but every time spring/summer would come around we were always busy with something else. So far everything has been going great! The chicks are about 3 1/2 weeks old. We have five right now; 1 RIR, 1 EE, 1 white crested black Polish, and 2 Silkies, 1 white and 1 dark grey. We’re crossing our fingers that our Polish and Silkies turn out to be pullets, but since we’re on five acres and roosters are allowed in our area, if we do get one we’ll probably be able to keep it. My father will probably be less than thrilled but my mom and I are interested to breed more of our own chickens in the future. Unfortunately, we’re probably going to have to build another coop as we’ve been bitten by the chicken bug and want to expand our flock. We weren’t even planning on getting five chicks- at first we were only going to get three! Luckily, our coop will be big enough for our five, so while upgrading is imminent, it’s not an emergency. We would like to free range but it seems too risky where we live. It is red tailed hawk city up here. So, we’ll probably have to settle for building them the biggest run we can and hanging CDs everywhere.
Anyways, I look forward to finally being part of this chicken-obsessed community!
