Davaroo - The cost was about $1000 AUD. I could have done it cheaper by sourcing 2nd hand materials etc . In the end I just went all out. I thought about the chook tractor option but we go away alot. A coop is easier to setup for auto feeding and water. I plan to let them out on weekends for a scratch around. The coop is next to the vege patch so I might put up temporary fencing when we want them to dig it over.
Anny - I am not exactly sure why they are called 'chooks' in Australia. It has been around for a long time, my Grandfather used to call them that. Maybe it is a derivation on 'chicks'?
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Will definitely post some photos once the ladies are installed. The pressure is on now to source some good layers. I kinda like the brown coloured hens but will have to see whats available.
