Newly hatched chick. NO EYES! **UPDATE 1-31-12** SHE LAYED!!!!!!!!

What a sweet story! And you've definitely got a little frizzle on your hands! You are brave and kind and I believe you probably have friend for life in that little one:)

Just a thought, should you decide to give the little guy a chance... I am wondering if some physical and audible cues might help it keep oriented. I envision some small windchimes stationed in critical locations, preferably with differing tones. One to lead to water and another, perhaps to food or the doorway. Maybe a path or track of a distinguishable surface, might lead to/from doorways, shelter, or whatever. For larger animals, I would lean towards pea gravel but for chickens, something as simple as a track of something less likely to succumb to scratching. I would suggest going to a home depot or lowes and buy some short lengths of indoor/outdoor carpet or fake grass runner. )Pin them or weight them to keep them in place) They come in 3' widths or you can get them cut from 12' wide rolls to whatever width you want. I did that to make runners through my new house to help keep my dogs from damaging my new floors. Different textures can lead to differnt locations. I realize we are only talking about chickens, but who know how much they can learn, especially when starting out very young. A small bell on your most tolerant hen, one who this little guy can relate to might also help if she will take it on. Be careful, however, chickens are notorious for attacking en masse should one become a target. I'd probably limit it's exposure to the full gang unless you are there to supervise, at least for a while. If you can set him/her up with one or 2 others to stay with/near when you are not there to supervise.

Awww how sweet. I hatched a chick with the same problem a few weeks ago, sadly I decided to cull it was the hardest thing I had to do. But good on you for not and letting the little chick carry on. I wish you good luck and hope the chick continues to thrive :)

so glad he's doing well
