Newly hatched chick. NO EYES! **UPDATE 1-31-12** SHE LAYED!!!!!!!!

The truth is, the others are just jealous of her lovely assortment of saddles. The fact that she's more than a little bit neurotic and not much to look at has nothing at all to do with it

. Though the rooster loves her. But that sends her into screaming fits "My feathers! My feathers!". Not that you can really blame the poor dear. On the bright side, she lays the prettiest, big, blue egg nearly every day.

I'm sure that there's no way you could look at that for a couple of days and not be absolutely enamored of her. Even at this distance, I can see how ... oh, man, I've really got the chicken bug, haven't I?

I totally get it. She's ... special. I did wind up on a whirlwind "what is a frazzle" search after I saw her, and I get it. This, from the girl who couldn't understand silkies _at_all_ and yet now has 23 silkie eggs in the incubator. The girl who wanted enough eggs to eat ... and who is now researching to get involved in the Lavender Orp project, which requires multiple breeding pens of at least two colors of orps, by which there is a side effect of ... oh, three more colors. ::le sigh::

Yeah, I love your girl, too. Covergirl or no.

Your little blind chick is lovely.....it looks like (s)he probably does have microphthalmia, and probably has tiny, sightless eyes.....but there's not a need to find out.

You should be every proud of yourself working out how to keep the chick safe, warm and catered for.

Blind creatures can live good long lives and learn to compensate for their lack of sight.

I have a blind ram....born 2.5 years ago.....we called him Dopey as he wasn't managing to get to his mum to be fed and would stand by the wall bleating. We didn't initially know why and thought he may be brain damaged. Eventually, during heavy rains, his mum ignored his bleats and just fed his twin. We bought Dopey in, cleaned and warmed him....and it became apparent he could not see. He went onto bottle feeds and now 'mows' the orchard and manages very well. He is also a great biscuit lover, and runs over pretty accurately if we continuously call him.He will never be meat.

Anyway, a long-winded way of saying that you are doing a great job, and I'm sure that your little special chick feels just fine having never known what sight was.

Awww I'm glad you updated this! But if it was a male did you plan on breeding him? I definitely would NOT do that because something like that is very likely genetic and you don't want something like that passed on. Plus, breeding frizzle to frizzle makes frazzles like the ones posted above. Breeding your frizzle pullets to a normal feathered roo would result in some frizzle babies

Edit; but looking back at the pics and lack of comb I'd say it's a girl anyway

I don't know many people who would have stuck to it like you have. I know you've gained so much since you did - a great feathery friend. Keep us updated - I totally want to see how s/he turns out!

I havnt gotten around to updating that, The dog that did it has been rehomed with a nice family and the chick was thriving VERY well and was at full grown and you could not tell she was missing a wing (asides when you found her squaking on her side cuz she sunbathed on wrong side and couldnt get back up LOL!!)

But sadly just a few weeks ago neighbors dog managed to break into the pen when I wasnt around and slaughtered her another and almost my whole flock of welsh harlequins asides from one hen. Sucks majorly she and blindy was my favorites

i'm so sorry to hear about the loss. but of all the people i've read about on this site, i know for sure you gave them all the best life any bird could ask for. every day you give the blind beauty is another day s/he wouldn't have had in the wild. same goes for the little one wing wonder, you've got a good heart. it takes so much patience and time to care for the "quirky" critters... not everyone is cut out for the job. you've proven that you've got what it takes ten fold. boo yah!

When I was a kid my friend had a blind pony named Shady Old Lady. We used that pony for trail riding, playdays, barrel racing, single pole, pole weaving, key hole you name it. We would race her against other ponies in the riverbed. That little pony could move. Funny thing was the girl who had the blind pony also had a deaf dog that Always went where ever the pony went!

Oh I was not aware of the "frazzle" no frizzy breeding to frizzy, and I just assumed that the eye thing was probably a incubator screw up that happened because I do recall the eletric going for awhile when he was being incubated

well hopefully it is a hen, and then the frizzles and milli's can keep eachother warm once hes bigger

One thing I noticed is he definetly doesnt go by "where everything is at" I moved the water dish to the opisite side of the pen and at the moment he only has a duck friend in there with him, Watched him stop and listen for the duck to go start drinking and then he rushed over and started drinking without a problem. Same with food

Good thing, he shouldnt have a problem adjusting to a large pen with the adults if he can just listen for food and water
