Newly hatched chick

Good evening everyone. I’m new to the chicken world and just hatched my very first egg in my cheaply made home made incubator. Chick hatched with what looked like an umbilical cord attached to the egg and it’s belly! Is that normal?

Looks like an unhealed navel. May develop in to mushy chick syndrome if infected. Do you have betadine? Or iodine?

No I don’t

It may close on it's own, but keep a close eye on it. Maybe research and see if you think it's worth going and buying iodine. Sorry about all this! I had one like this and she was fine w/o iodine, it just depends on the situation.

He was eager to come out. Started at 3AM on day 21. Hatched a few hours into day 22

Reassess in the morning, the navel may have closed by then. No use buying it and putting some on if it healed on it's own.
