Newly Hatched Limping Silkie Chick….

Can I give her scrambled egg for vitamin B? I read that you can do that for chicks, but wondering if she would need grit to digest?

She seems to have a lump in the middle of her foot now. I made a different post about that.

YES, scrambled egg is perfectly healthy and beneficial for chicks. I didn't know they also contained five of the eight essential B vitamins! Thanks for finding that. I knew about D, A, and a few others, but not the B's. Do it!

Grit isn't needed for their chick feed, eggs, or anything else soft and easily digested. The purpose of grit is to grind up food and other things they swallow that can't be digested easily, like whole grains, wood chips, etc.

I have no idea what the lump on a 2-day-old chick might be! I would *think* that bumblefoot isn't likely, since how could she have injured her foot to cause infection? I'm guessing it MAY be more likely inflammation(?) related to a slipped tendon or something, or a sprain? Just guessing. I hope others might have an answer.

Is there any improvement in walking?

I gave her a little scrambled egg this morning. Everything I read online said that if you fed anything other than chick food, you needed grit. But, I figured scrambled egg is so soft, what could it hurt? She didn’t eat very much of it, just a few bites.

She is doing so much better as the day goes on. I’ve left the band-aid brace off and she is putting more weight on it and walking less on her toes and not holding her leg out as much, but still hopping some. With the brace off, she is mingling with the other chicks now, eating with them. Before she was keeping to herself and I had to take her out separately for her to eat and drink. So, I think she’s going to be okay. She sure had me concerned this morning!

Thanks for all your help!! I pray you’re feeling better!!

Yay! That's great news. Hopefully she continues to improve. If a chick has wry neck, I know it's strongly recommended to feed cooked egg yolk (with the white for selenium to absorb vitamin D), either straight or mixed with their chick feed. No grit is needed. And yes, I'm feeling much better today, thank you!

I’m really not sure what is going on. She is still limping around, sometimes walks on her toes. The band aid shackles have helped a bit, but she still has a limp and holds her leg up. For awhile I thought maybe her one leg was shorter, but I don’t think that’s it, either. I went out and got B vitamins today and crushed one up and dissolved some in water in case it’s a vitamin deficiency. I’m at a loss how to help her. Can she live a fairly normal life with a limp?

As long as she's able to get to food and water, and eating and drinking well, and her growth is on par with the other chicks - then YES, she can. :)

But if not, then it's likely she will die soon. :(

She’s drinking and eating well. She’s a fighter, so that gives me hope!!
