Newly obsessed - what the heck do you do with all the chicks?

Hi ! Welcome! My corgi totally ignores my chickens. It's my rat terrier I have to watch!

Some people sell them, Craigslist might be an option locally. Or even someone here might be local to you that might be interested. Otherwise, the chicken math suggests that the coop might need to be expanded...

I want my hens to sit on the eggs and hatch them. How do you make them do that?

You have to get the right breeds of chickens (silkies, cochins, game breeds, seramas, and buff orpingtons are all a good bet), and then just wait and hope!

I currently have five broody seramas, it's ridiculous.

Also, my corgis are great with my chickens, too. They're more interested in the chicken food than the chickens themselves.

What do I do with all the chicks? Feed 'em, love 'em, watch 'em, pick them up and love on 'em, name them, hatch them some more buddies, love them, build more coops... ad infinitum.

Now, what SHOULD one do with all the chicks? What the other folks who have at least one sensible bone in their bodies have suggested.

Love em, feed em.

Oh...and any version of a Terrier = Chicken Terrorist.

I have a Chug...(Chihuahua/Pug mix) it has just enough of the terrier still in his Chihuahua side that small chickens are not safe. It's funny though, to watch him spar with the big hens. They both like to chase the same chunk of bread...sometimes the dog wins, sometimes the hen. Whoever loses...takes a nip at the winner and sulks. Funny stuff.

I sell mine locally, either word of mouth to other country folk or via Craigslist. Even if I only get $2-3 each, it helps cover some of the feed costs for the ones we keep. If you're selling something interesting/unusual you can charge more, of course.

Thanks for all the replies! I love this forum. Since this is my first hatch ever, I might be counting my chicks before they hatch.............javascript:insert_text('

Now, see, that's my problem. With 3 Bantams, it seems like one of them is always broody. They are so darned cute, I can't resist finding a few fertile eggs for them to sit on. Problem is, I can't keep hatching 5-7 eggs every few months! I've given most of them away on Freecycle or to co-workers and kept 1 or 2.

LOL yeah me too I have some hatching in the bator now..... Worst part is I was >< close to buying more on MPC and having them delivered. But I walked away from the order and decided I didn't have the room for 2 brooders possibly 3 when/if the duck eggs ever arrive
