News- Clucking Chickens in Hollywood Yard Prompt Lawsuit

If the coop is just to sleep and lay eggs, as long as the chickens spend most of their time free ranging they should be fine in a small coop.

My chickens over the years always smashed themselves into a small corner when they went in at night--they had a huge coop. I think the body contact makes them feel secure as they rest. There is safety in numbers where many prey animals are concerned.

Congrats on keeping the birds.

BigDaddy'sGurl :

While I am happy that you get to keep your chickens, I have to mention something that bothered me: why did nobody else notice that 15 chickens are being kept in a 21 square foot coop? yes, they free range during the day, but 21 square feet for 15 chickens? I thought that the standard allowance was 4 square feet of coop space per bird...that means that the coop would need to be 60 square feet of space...or am I wrong? I do also think that having that many in such a small area is bordering on problematic...and regardless of whether the neighbor "lured" your chickens onto her property, I hope you have truly made adjustments so such happenings can't recur. Good Luck!

The only problem with "standard allowances" is that not everything is standard. For one, something like a bantam Modern Game would need less space per bird than my Jersey Giants. Some coop designs are more efficient than others too. The most important adjustment, when faced with a neighbor devious enough to lure a bird over to complain about is to change the neighbors attitude . . . but the neighbor might have to cooperate a little on that adjustment.

In South FL they only need a safe place to roost at night, it is also 2 floors so it is really closer to 42 sq, they roost and lay eggs in there and nothing else, I let them out as soon as they can see. I have shade and water proof areas all around with food and water so that they can get out of the rain easily and can get to food without fighting.

It is not so many in a small area, they have 1500 sq ft of run and they cannot get out, as with any structure you only realize there is a problem when someone gets in or out. Once I saw her up on the fence I clipped her wings, and once I saw my neighbor digging under to let her in, I put large rocks and now it doesn't happen.

All too often people expect that what is needed for where they live is what everyone needs (I know I am guilty of that also). I live in the Arizona desert; if I built coops like are used up north or in places that get sub-zero in winter, my chickens would literally broil in them--even if they were only in them at night. If someone in that climate tried to use coops like mine, their chickens would literally turn into blocks of ice. I have a few birds who have no coop, but they do have a large yard to roam in, and they roost where they choose. For coops that are used only at night, the best way of determining adequate space is linear feet of roosts: each bird needs its width plus an inch or two. With silkies, I guess you need to determine the area of their pile in summer

Glad that the judge ruled in your favor now if you can get the fine problem taken care of. You should be fine. Good luck.

Most of them are smaller breeds (Anconas, Andalusians, leghorns...they weigh on average 3 lbs) so the space works for them, but I had a JG hen and she was huge! she needed twice the space and didn't fit in the nesting box!

Sonoran Silkies, yeah I was looking at coops and mine would melt in them! and my coop in the Midwest would freeze the chickens, it has no insulation and 2 large windows with wire for a cross breeze.
I have two 7 ft long roosts and a 3 tier wire rack that is about 3 ft wide, they like them and it allows hens lower in the pecking order to get out of the way.

Schellie69: This attorney says that he can get it taken care of. My cousin (Sara Shulevitz, maybe you have heard of her, she is pretty famous) suggested.

Yes, I like it since it's different

This is completely unrelated, but I saw in the video of you (or your family?) wearing the Moroccan (I think?) robes, they are so pretty.
