I had already posted a thread on this, but it got buried by the others so I figured I’d try a fresh one. Our 4 year old hen has a very full, very squishy crop. She also smells of sauerkraut and has a pasty butt. We sat her in a tub of warm water last night to clean up her rear and unstick (most) of her feathers. She was very lethargic and spitting up brownish liquid/crooking her neck. I tried gently massaging her crop, but it was so full that the slightest touch made her puke. We restricted her food and water intake overnight to see if she would be a bit better by morning. Today she was walking around instead of sitting, but still a bit lazy. She wasn’t clucking like she usually did. I read that “vomiting” a chicken with sour crop can help them clear their crop. She was so swollen and continued to spit up, so we decided to watch several educational YouTube videos and give it a try. Luckily she was a very good patient and kept her head down as we did it, not straining or choking at all. Between “vomits” we’d let her rest and swallow/breathe. Let me tell you, the breaks were for us as well. Nothing is worse smelling than the black liquid that comes out of a chicken with sour crop.
Surprisingly, she seemed a lot better after her crop was slightly less bloated. We gave her a sip of ACV water and she seemed to enjoy it. Even clucked a few times. She’s nowhere near cured, but I want to keep her on a good track. Any more I can do? I heard that vomiting a hen with sour crop each morning should help. Any tips?
