NH Maple Syrup 2009 Season

When did your sap start running? and how many trees do you tap?

I just tapped my trees yesterday (just 6) and it just began to run after our -5 temps finally went away:)

Oh my that pie sounds wonderful... I just love pecan pie, I've never had it with maple syrup in it..

We have just started tapping about 2 weeks ago when there was a warm front and surprisingly enough it ran for quite a few days till we got another snowstorm. But it was in the 50's today and it ran really well. Tomorrow supposed to be just as warm, but a cooler night which is ideal. We have 50 tapped so far, but we're looking to add more we just happen to have run out of buckets at the moment. The kids just love helping, we had a cookout today to kick off the season.

Kristie,

I'd like to go to the Chickenstock in Chichester, but I'll have to see how many I have left. I'll look up the info for the show and see if I can make plans.

woo hoo just paid for me. I can taste it now with a little blueberry pancake and fresh OJ to go with it....

Hi, I'm glad to see another sugarier on here..
How are you testing your density of your syrup?

Are you using a Hydrometer or a candy thermometer??

when i started i used to use Candy thermometer, but then started using a syrup hydrometer, always got good consistency results with the hydrometer..

Some i make for my self i make extra thick, the only thing is it will crystallize a lot faster..but are youngest daughter likes the thicker syrup, so i make it that way just for her..well and me to.. lol

Hi Charlie,

Are you're taps running yet? We're using a candy thermometer at the moment, until our next trip to pick up more containers I'll pick up a hydrometer then. Does it work that well?? I have heard its easier.

We had a good Saturday run, but then it all lagged off on Sunday, now they're forcasting another 6" of that white stuff...
