I'am new to geese, expecting 2 pair of buff goslings 4-6-11. why do you give geese niacin ? Is it to prevent angel wing and at what age do you give it to them? thanks for the info.

I can't give you a positive answer, but I believe niacin is given on an as needed basis for if the start to develop crooked legs. I think its believed that angel wing is suspected to be a sign of protein deficiency.

Im sure someone here will pip in and correct or confirm what I understand.

Enjoy your babies, they are great! I love mine to death!

Hi FogHornLegHornWV,

Niacin supplementation is done to ward against the effects of niacin deficiency, which i read is caused by waterfowl being less well able to produce it themselves.. so you add it to their water from birth to prevent a whole schwack of potentially icky things. Heres a link where you can read up: http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/206928.htm (at least thats how i did it. i read you can add it into their crumbles by way of brewers yeast instead of straight niacin diluted in water )

I believe i got the right dosages right from this website, so try searching both here and some of the other sub boards like ducks etc. I got my niacin from the pharmacist ( who was a little weirded out that i was giving it to my duckings, but whatever ) and it wasnt terribly expensive, given that i now have a lifetime supply. You just give them the right doseage dissolved in their water and dont worry too much about it. Esp because it can accumulate to toxic levels in their bodies, so err on the side of less than more. I think you only give it to them for the first 6-12 weeks or so, but youll have to find that out for sure.

Angel wing comes from getting too *much* protein and can be passed on from the parents. I hear its fixable in babies, not so much once grown. Good luck !
