Niacin?

My duckling just hatched day before yesterday. It's getting upward better now but still keeps it's hocks bent outwards. I've tried hobbling, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I just gave her a drop of nutri-drench. She eats when I offer and I dunk her bill in the water whenever I walk by the brooder. It has a scab over its umbilicus; I wanted to do some water therapy, but I'm worried about that scab. Can I put colorhexidine concentrate into the bath water? They use it for reptilian dental surgeries, so I imagine swallowing a little bit won't hurt?

That I don't know. I don't think I'd put the duckling in water till the scab has fallen off on it's own. you could try those exercises that Lacrystol was telling someone else about making them use their legs to gain strength but you'll have to get instructions from her. something about having them stand on your open palm but don't remember exactly what to do.

If she was just a tiny duckling makes me think this maybe a birth defect instead of a niacin issue but I would continue with the B's does she drink water on her own you might try adding some to her water it won't hurt the others. I know Poultry Nutri Drench can be given by mouth and others like to use Poly vi sol with out iron which tastes awful. At this point it's either a vet or just keep trying with the vitamins. Keeping food and water close by so she doesn't have to exert herself. Will she float in warm water? how does she use her legs?

She was fine for the first couple of weeks, but has gradually gotten worse since then. I did let her swim last night and she seemed to get around fine, though I couldn't really tell if she was using her legs differently than before.

Okay well it may be a vitamin dif. then , best you can do is keep on the way your going and hope for the best, Hopefully someone else will have something to add because i feel I haven't helped much. They usually respond pretty quick if dif. By no means give up though you just never know when it all may click in. I'd keep up with the warm bathes to relieve pressure and also to build muscles. Hope it all helps.

What does "getting out on the ground" do?? Some of mine are on cement and straw, and some are w/mom and dad on the ground!
Flockraiser has 20% protein--which some people say is too much at 3+ wks?? But some people use Flockraiser all the time. I had a duck that developed "angel wing",-- thinking I fed it Breeder and Layer feed (which my chickens were eating). I'm wondering if it was the calcium that caused the "angel wings"???? We taped his wings too, but it must have been too late, as it didn't help!!
