Nice roo comments?????

I had a solitary big black roo, GORGEOUS bird. His ladies were taken by predators but he still hung in there for another 1.5 to 2 years before something got him, too. Needless to say, now that we have gotten serious about chickens they are no longer 24/7 free range with no coop.

Anyhoo, he was huge, big spurs, crowed a fair amount, but never attacked. Just an all around cool guy. I LOVED that Rooster.

Right now my flock of 19 hens and 1 roo are 22 weeks old. My Roo is nothing but nice to us. But we shall see. Sure hope he stays that way, as he is one of my favorites. I am hopeful as he is one of the ones I handled alot since he was little. (splash cochin)

Anyone that knows me knows that I adore my rooster Thor. He's good with the hens and does his best to protect them and take care of them.
My former alpha roo had to have a little behavior modification, but he was a good roo too. He was re-homed, not because of his behavior but as a favor to a dear friend. It also helped me out because I had decided I only wanted one roo.
I won't have a flock without a roo.

I have had alot of good boys and only a few bad ones. Among the bad my first was a cuckoo marans named Earl. It started out good until he got to be a very hormonal teenager and thought it would be fun to pick on me, he began flogging to which at the time i reacted by booting him away pretty soon he'd come running right back for more and things got a bit hairy... So hairy I had to walk outside to do the chores with a very large stick and if i dare drop that stick for a brief moment he would jump in for the kill. I couldn't handle him whatsoever. My next was a bantam cochin, evil, pure evil! He attacked me everyday any time he seen me in the yard, one day he got ahold of my face! WHen he went after my nephew tho thats when i decided he could no longer stay here. He went to a friend on a farm, the friend knows this rooster is crazy and he is ok with that as long as he treats the girls good which he did very well. I love all my roos whether they are good or bad but ya gotta part with some. My roosters help brood chicks, protect the girls, find them lots of treats, and keep them warm over the long cold winter. To me that is priceless. I kinda like the sound of the crows in the morning and enjoy watching them out in the yard with their favorite girls living life to the fullest

There are so many nice roos around there's never any reason to put up with bad manners for a moment with any others. I have 8 roos running with my large laying flock, and they all are gentlemen. I don't have to worry about them spurring or flogging me, my children, or my guests.

I like keeping roos because it seems they help make a balanced flock society. They are also good for sounding the alarm when danger threatens. I like the sound of their crowing, and they're extremely handsome animals.

I think the key is to not let yourself get closely attatched to the bird until he proves his worth. Some folks have these awful roosters they cannot bear to get rid of, because he has a name & a history & his own Christmas stocking already. There are lots & lots of roosters being butchered for meat simply because there are no positions available for them as flock husbands, breeders, or pets. A lot of them are gentle and handsome. Don't stop until you find a roo that behaves well for you.

I am new to this too...but here goes. I have a gold laced wyandotte rooster named Napoleon a.k.a "pecky". He is a bantam, so he is much smaller than my standard hens (16 hens) He was a rescue that I adopted from someone who had 15+ roosters. Pecky loves my husband and I, but goes after my 2 kids(No spurs thank God!). The kids get out their "pecky sticks" and never turn their backs. He never goes after my husband or I. Other than terrorizing my kids he is a great protector and beautiful bird.

Thanks for the replies and all of you that insist you wouldn't have a flock without one.

Sunny side up.......you made me chuckle with the Christmas stocking part. Note to self: Don't name roos until you're sure they are sticking around. Thanks.

I guess I'll have to jump in the pool and hope I can swim.

I have two roosters, a White Crested Black Polish and a Speckled Sussex. Neither of them have ever given me a second's trouble. They show no aggression towards humans, they don't fight each other, they're nice to their ladies, and they don't crow excessively.

I have two cockerals. And both are very nice. They were hatched sometime march-april. I got them because the one was so pretty and the other just turned out to be one. But like I said they are both nice. My 3 and 9 year old boys walk right in the coop and pick them up. No fuss. I pick them up and pet them at least once a day. All the chickens are friends. If I had to get rid of my cockerals, I'd be very sad. But the lady I got them from said she would take them back for whatever reason. And they would live a long, happy life.

I love my roo. He is:
1. pretty to look at.
2. funny to watch (he dances for the hens)
3. He protects the hens
4. He finds wonderful treats for the hens.
5. He keeps the girls in the yard.
6. He keeps the peace between the hens.
7. I love to hear him crow!!!
