Nice roo comments?????

I agree with c_soto1990 -- I love all my girls, but I ADORE my boys!

My alpha roo (big RIR) Sarge is a WONDERFUL rooster. He keeps vigil and warns of any intruders or threats, and does his best to keep everyone safe. He always lets everyone (including other roos) begin eating first when I bring treats out, but he does make sure he doesn't just sit back and let them all pig out without partaking of the goodness himself

. He is quick to settle "dust-ups" between the younger crowd, and is never mean, although he does get what I would consider a little bit harsh with the teenager cockerels, but then again maybe that's what it takes to convince them that HE is the boss (second in command under Big Mama Hen, aka me!

) The next in line after Sarge is Moose, a Buff Orp roo who has his special ladies and knows when to keep his place. I love my boys!!

ETA: I have a pair of guineas (male & female) and the female still sees Sarge as the Boss. When she gets cold or needs comforting for some reason, she goes to Sarge and tucks her head under his wing. I've gone out to the henhouse for one reason or another during the night, and in the cooler months Sarge always has his wings spread out with as many hens (or at least heads) as will fit under his wings, snuggled up to him. I can't say enough good things about this guy!

Well, if Sarge ever needs a new home....

I have to say I LOVE the looks of the RIR rooster, but since they are known to be aggressive, I'm not considering them. I have 2 boys (9 and 6) so I want a more docile rooster. (protect his ladies, be a gentleman, but not attack me or my kids)

We have a bunch of roos right now! 18 of them actually. We are keeping 3, the rest will be butchered (because we don't need a roo for every 1.5 hens!). What we have observed is really breed related... (note these are all hatchery quality, so good breed quality roos are probably much better).

DELAWARES: The Delaware roos are the bosses. Two were really mean (got rid of them for the sake of our hens!), the other two are nice (one of which we are keeping).

JERSEY GIANT: The Jersey Giant roo is the nicest bird of all my chickens! LOVE HIM!!! KEEPING HIM!!!

He is 5 months old and still isn't crowing, but I have heard the breed has a gorgeous, deep toned crow. I can't wait!!! He bawks and grumbles really deep though. It's cute.

BUCKEYE: The Buckeye roos are mostly nice with a few bad apples. They are all nice to us, but a few are aggressive with the hens. If we could have more roos, I'd keep one of them too!!

SALMON FAVEROLLE: Our salmon faverolle roo is a nice, though bossy to me. I like him and we are keeping him too!

MOTTLED JAVA: Most of our mottled Java roos are evil biters who attack our hens!! They fight a lot, attack the hens, come after us at times...just an all around nasty bird.

Our Delaware roo will definitely be the top roo of the three and he alerts the group to everything. He's a bit on the aggressive side, but not overly aggressive, so we'll deal with it. He doesn't fight with the other roos and will grudgingly let me hold him. He's given me a good pinch a few time, but overall will be a great roo and protector of the flock. The other two roos are not good protectors.

The JG roo is very shy and would probably be the first to hide.

But, we just LOVE him!!! Great personality and the hens and roos all like to hang out with him. He's huge and towers over everyone, so no one picks on him and he doesn't have a mean bone in his body.

Of our 18 roos (20 originally), I'd say 1/2- 2/3 are good roos (including how they act to the hens) and probably 1/4 -1/3 are roos worth keeping. Some just have a bit too much testosterone.

I have one who will jump up and pinch your arm to get your attention. He likes to be talked to (but not held) and will do whatever it takes to get you to acknowledge him.

I haven't had a really bad roo. I have a cowardly rooster who does nothing to protect his flock and stupidly tries to tell them there's food in places there isn't. He doesn't exactly do anything bad though he's just worthless. I have an EE roo that is more protective and may be pulling a few feathers out of the hens but I have a very low hen to roo ratio right now and he hasn't shown any real agression toward humans. He just makes a whole lot of noise when people are around his hens or coop and puffed up at the cat when she tried to follow me into the coop tonight. I can forgive them for not being perfect. My best roos have been my japanese bantams. They are wonderful with their hens. When the dog attacked the cowardly standard roo ran for the coop letting his hens scatter and die. He lost all but 2 of his 8 hens that followed him and I collected those 2 out of the yard after running the dog off. The jap roos collected their hens and told them where to run. Both died in the process but between them they lost only 1 hen in the doorway of the coop out of the more than a dozen that were following them. I do also have 3 serama roos but they are still a bit young to tell how they'll act.

One of ours is quite tame(so far,he is an easter egger cross) so I guess thats why I like HIM.
But in general I would like one around for the fertile eggs and I actually like the crowing.(If its only from one or two of them).

I still consider myself a newbie chicken keeper, and have only had four roos so far (well, one's still young, so he hasn't blossomed into his roosterhood yet) but I think I've gotten the full spectrum of rooster behaviours already.

My Silver Sebright roo was AWFUL. As soon as his hormones really kicked in, he started biting hard, (he drew blood a few times), spurring, and most annoying, sneak attacking. I couldn't do anything in the coop or yeard without him coming up from behind and letting me have it , repeatedly. He stirred up a lot of trouble among the other chickens as well. I finally rehomed him, but it took forever.

Mille Fleur d'Uccle - he's about in the middle. Can get belligerant, but if I don't back down he'll mellow. If he's being extra onery, I'll pick him up and carry him around for a while and that usually gets me some peace after I put him down. Kinda rough on the hens, but we only have a few so that's probably why. Overall, I like him, but my Mom is scared of him so he'll most likely be rehomed in the near future.

Serama - OMG, I love my Serama boy.

He's sweet and funny, and only has aggression issues with black slippers, gloves, and shoes. LOL He'll perch on my legs and sleep with me when I nap in the afternoon, and usually hangs out on the back of my chair when I'm on the computer. I raised him as a lone chick, though, which probably influenced his behaviour a lot. He doesn't quite get the hang of being with other chickens, and will usually follow me around instead of them. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Araucana - Don't know about him yet... LOL He's only two months old, and so far is very sweet and mellow.
