Nice to meet you!

Well in that case tell your DH you need 5 to start! That is what the chickeneers tell you is best and 5 are just as difficult to raise as 3 plus you might only experience an 80% success ratio so you have to plan on some losses! Pasty Butt checks should get you to close to 100% success rates during their first 2 weeks of life. I would have lost a few if I wasn't doing that.
Oooh, 5 chickens?! I can't wait to tell my skeptical but willing husband! Haha! In all seriousness, though, that isn't a bad idea. I am considering getting pullets that can just go outside immediately. Is pasty butt still a risk for 4 week olds?

Usually not but for some breeds you have to always watch for poop buildup near the vent and give them a sanitary trimming from time to time.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Just as an aside... whether you start with 3 or 5, plan for more down the road. Chickens get very addicting and chicken math is a very real hing! Build with the future in mind so if you DO end up adding, you don't have to start over building.

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
