Hi there. I have been reading Backyard Chickens for ages, just never officially joined. I had "chooks" ( chicken or hens in Australian slang) as a youngster and acquired a small flock again a decade or so ago but due to a move had to leave them with the new owner. We are finally in the position to have them again. But in an urban backyard, so just a tiny flock or 3 or 4. The coop and run aren't even built yet, this is just forward planning.
What's the wisdom or otherwise of getting them as little chicks rather than point of lay. I have grandchildren who would love chicks but I know that will subside as they get to the teenage stage. ( the chooks not the kids) . Any thoughts?

I vote Chicks because look how cute they are

Welcome to BYC! I’ve never personally gotten them as chicks… so don’t have experience with that. Our first four we got were about 7-8 months, already laying. This year we got 4 additional girls, about 3 months old. I’d love to raise them from chicks but we are at the max number of chickens allowed where we live.
