Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats Blog - Triplets born - New baby pics

Quote:
That sounds just like my hubby!! He tried talking me out of them. But I begged, lol, and he caved. The worst part for me was we got 3 bottle babies with the oldest being 6 days old and the youngest 2 days old. So I had to bottle feed 3 baby pygmies for months. But they sure are super friendly and love us to pieces.

Oh no - just had to drag Rex out of goat pen. Really scary.

I went out to check on them and all but Goldie were in the pen and not in the shed where Rex tries really hard to keep them. I could look through small door and see dark shadow laying on ground which I think is Rex so I start calling him - no movement. I'm calling Goldie - no Goldie. Panic stricken I'm trying to get that big fricking gate open that has to be drug and lifted at same time and is 20' long. Anyway I run to shed and Rex is obviously alive and laying next to Goldie. Goldie is laying down and at first I don't know if she is alive but I do see that she is wet. I have to pull Rex away to check her out. Turns out she is wet from being licked and bathed by Rex who came right back and started licking her again. Also using his teeth to groom her fur like he does to get fleas off. She's loving every minute and just lays back down and closes her eyes like it's the greatest thing. He's really getting into it. Now I'm really scared.

The little goat, who was just taken from her mama, either thinks Rex is a new mama and so does Rex or he thinks she's a cute little GSD cause he was really into it. Either way - it was just too cute or too scary so I drug him out and let her run with the rest for a while and let him go back to being a dog. Now he's sitting by gate whining and whimpering.

Interesting first full day and it's only half over.

He is a pretty cool dog and very smart and takes "guarding" very seriously. He gets so into it. Not many dogs, even Shepherds, would let a new goat come on his property, take a bite out of him, and still cuddle up with them and give them a tongue bath and teeth preening.

I just put some new peachicks (finally ordered some) and marans out in a cage outside - they are a week old - and told Rex to guard the baby chicks. He wouldn't even let the older chickens come take a look at the babies. Every time one got near he chased it off like he was going to kill it. These are the same chickens that he slept with and guarded the same way when they were baby chicks.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. I did finally get to pet the goats. They seem to be warming up to me and calmed down enough to let me walk up to them and pet them. They don't seem to be eating much of their feed, especially the little one. We did get them to eat a few Sweetgum tree leaves. The breeder said they liked those which is good because we have them everywhere growing like weeds. DH cut a few branches off one and gave it to them and they all ate a little. I'm hoping they will begin eating. I don't think any one of them has eaten more than a few pieces of food since they got here yesterday afternoon.

Are there any treats that are good and healthy and may get them to eat? I tried apple pieces but they ignored it. The breeder said she only fed them goat feed and hay.

Apples are ok but hte seeds can be toxic. I personally wouldnt give alot of treats, it will make them fat. Fritoes or tostioes are ok. I raise Nigerians and I wouoldnt breed them till they are 18 mths of age. They may be upset from the move and might need a little baking soda to settle their tummies. Moving will upset alot of things. You might want to start some Cocci treatments and worm them too. Cocci thrives on stress and will cause a goat to go down fast. Their temps should run at about 102 and if its higher than 103 thats time to worry and treat with soemthing like banamine for fever. Also you can join a goat site for more help. I go to www.goattalk.com and there are others out there and most will help. Give them time they will love ya and enjoy your time with them and dont rush them. Good Luck

Here's some current photos of my little goats. They love to come to gate and "baaaa" or whatever it is goat say. That means hubby or I go cut some sweet gum branches for them and throw into pen. They love them.

I'm also bucket training them and they come running when they see the bucket and allow me to pet them while they eat.

We did have a slight scare the other night. Came home from dinner out and couldn't find Bitsy (the tiny one). She wasn't in pen or shed. However, Rex was running back and forth in front of stables trying to tell us she was in there. She was. She had gotten in by slipping through a loose board on back of stables that form wall of fenced goat area. Luckily, just the day before, hubby had closed all the stable doors so she couldn't get out. It served to justify my design idea of cutting a hole there, since the boards were loose to begin with and making a little door so they could go into stables at night and be locked in instead of being left out in open shed.

Oh, I am so excited for you!!!

What farm did they come from? What reg. are they with? Are you going to show them? If the blond one does not get to tall, I think she would do very well in the ring(how old is she). I hope you show! It is very fun! It is good to have another nigerian breeder in Mississippi. Good Luck

P.S. I don't know about yours but my nigis say "Maaa"....lol.
