I have two pens and only one coop. I have been putting the groups together at night loose in the coop. There are two cockerels in one group and 1 in the other (along with 14 pullets total). I don't let the "young" group into the coop until the big guys are settled on their roosts and by then it is too dark for them to fight.

I get up early to let them out right at dusk as they are waking up.

Last night was the first night that I let the young ones in a little early as the boys from each group were antagonizing each other on one of the roosts.

I can imagine it would be a bad idea if I did not get out there before they all "woke up" completely....but if not, would this work long term? am I correct in assuming all they do is sleep all night long? Seems like they are usually in the same order in the morning on the roost as they were when I left them, so I just assume they sleep all night.

any thoughts?

Chickens do not move once darkness sets in, they are blind as bats.
Can the roosters see each other during the day?
When they are introduced on full time basis there will be some fighting but to determine pecking order but it SHOULDN'T get out of hand. I would just monitor them a while to make sure.
