night terrors!

I used to have horrible nightmares as a child and I would wake up screaming, until my mother brought me for a priest for a blessing and prayers and he told me that I would stop being afraid and that Jesus would protect me and it worked. I was very young.
I continue to be a sleepwalker though. I will have verbal fights with people and be told of them later. I have discovered that in all instances of these, I have been exhausted. So although I keep very busy, I never allow myself to become overly tired or deprived of sleep too long. Its way too scary to think of what I might do in my sleep.
I do become fearful at times and I can have some real doozies......nightmares. So I wake up and begin praying and then perhaps get into a routine of going to sleep praying. In my faith, we use a lot of Sacramentals and I keep them all about the house.
I might be sticking my neck out here a bit, but I don't think it is necessarily a mental thing, so much as the enemy of our souls making an assault on us. They are tricky. I believe in God......stands to reason, I should also believe in the other one too.

I know mine happen for several reasons that I really have no control over. One is exhaustion (mother to 4 young babies and a husband that has health issues) which is also tied to the second which is stress. And hormones some of my worst have been while pregnant or that certain moon phase. But I think the genetic predisposition makes it all possible I know my grandparents and great grandparents along with my dad and his brother its just something about our brains. My grandmother says its cause we're sensitive and intelligent with passion in our blood. We're Indian, Irish, and German. What I find interesting is ours are more personal than the researchers say are "standard". Its not obtuse figures and creepy crawlies (although we do have those) its about our families and the people and circumstances around us. And sometimes when I do finally wake up I am still confused the next day. My dad says sometimes he has the same problem figuring out if something was really said the day before or just that night. Maybe we're all psychotic since that tends to help the brain susptible to these terrors. Lol. I do know its reassuring to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I wonder sometimes if its something about our family cause we don't exactly fit the mold for night terrors. Our episodes also can last a long time once my hubby said it lasted an hour after I woke him. At least I know how to help my kids. Talismans help kids whether a pet or a designated guard stuffed animal or a bedtime prayer. And definetly a good bedtime routine. Ps. Thanks for the links they've updated research in the last couple of years.

I had suffered from screaming nightmares that'd wake the whole house for over a decade. Docs blamed stress, childhood traumas, stress, blood sugar problems, asthma but finally what got it?
Sleep apnea. The sleep study showed I stopped breathing about every two minutes. Now, there are lots of other reasons I could legitimately be having screaming nightmares all the time, but when I wear the (*&( machine ALL NIGHT I never wake up with the nightmares. Go figure! Now, if I could only wear this dratted thing consistently...

I have had them, and sleep walk/talk/ scream/ hit never know it myself, just what parents then hubby told me.

The dark night hides many things from the light of day...

Darkness is forbidden in my home. I cannot control the dreams
but I can banish the dark. At times, I too am troubled by uncontrollable
dreams, to the extent that I have a recliner in the bedroom...I can be chased
from the bed, but the monsters can't find me in the chair.

Not exactly scared of the dark.

More of I no longer trust the night.

My son had them when he was 3 yrs old for 2 years. He is deaf and it was hard for him to tell me what was wrong at that age

He always signed spiders to me and he would make me turn on every light in the house and then he would freak out while he was awake at times as well. He said spiders were crawling on him and he was so scared. My hubby didn't believe him for the longest time and we for the first week made him go back to his bed

I feel SO bad about it yet to this day. We finally took him into the doctors and they said it was Night Terrors and he was scared of spiders. He must have had a spider on him in his crib at one point and that started it. He is still scared of spiders to this day.

I don't often do that kind of thing, but DH does ALL the time.
It's rarely screaming, usually more just violent fighting motions(he's an Iraq veteran). Sometimes he sits up or stands up suddenly and doesn't know who I am and he looks really freaked out until I can wake him up.

Occasionally it is hilarious. Awhile back I showed him that really cool bee thread "step into my world" that was posted on here. Later that night I was reading and he was asleep. He pointed at the wall and muttered, "BEES! Manymanymany...MANY BEES!"...

I, on the other hand, have pretty bad sleep apnea. I'm not overweight, just unlucky on genetics. If I fall asleep on my back I have horrible nightmares about drowning or smothering and I can't wake up. So no audible screaming, but I'm screaming in my head. Not fun.

My daughter now 7 suffered with them from toddler to age 4. Dr diagnosed her with sleep apnea (she had other simptoms too... bed wetting, snoring and would sometimes stop breathing...scary). The cure for young children with sleep apnea is removing the tonsils. Once she had hers out the symptoms stopped immediately. We now get to sleep through the night (most nights anyway).

I also have dreams that are so scary that I try to wake myself up by kicking and screaming and it never works...very frustrating! Good luck and sweet dreams.

So far so good for me and Bub. The baby on the other hand has been in my room the last two nights. She keeps saying bad dog. The dog sleeps in the boys room. *shrugs* like they ever make sense.
