New chicken owner, so please be kind! Our 8 wk old silkie bantams were transitioned to their coop/run from the brooder (in our office) about a week ago. When they were in our house, I left a nightlight on in the room so they could see a little in their box to get to their food/water/heater.
Their coop is pitch black at night. Do they still need a little nightlight to see? What do you all experienced owners do? I don't want to affect them negatively when it comes to day light length, winter and laying (or not laying), etc.
Thank you!

Some people provide a light at dusk to help them get inside and turn it off when they close up the coop for the night. We have some solar powered lights around the coop/run (more so we can see what we're doing at night since our back porch light does not reach) and the one shines just a tiny bit of light into the coop from a window. It's just a enough to give them a little bit of light at dusk to get settle, but not enough to affect.

I actually believe that chickens need darkness to sleep well.
Having a light at dusk if your coop is to dark inside will help the chickens see the roost bars and get settled in to their prefered spot. After that the lights should go out.
I have one window in my roost area and all the chickens and guineas are accustomed to getting settled in before darkness.
They do not need to eat or drink until morning.
