Nightly party in the coop

My chickens don't mind the light at all. They really don't need a light though. We only turn it on if it is raining or snowing.

I use a red heat lamp in the coops when it's below 20F. I put them on timers, set to come on for 15 minutes every hour or so.

I have a big window in the hen coop and can see them from the house at night. Until it gets close to morning, they usually are asleep on their roost. They do start partying, though, as it gets closer to morning and they've had enough sleep.

I don't use any heat at all and we have some pretty cold nights. I'm sure that it'll do no harm and that they will eventually adjust to it if you want to leave some heating.

Just a suggestion, though. Insulating the coop and providing hen jackets which you can make yourself to the balder ones is a cheaper option in the winter.
