I have to add that it does depend on the breed. Our Hamburgs are much happier when they're free. We've had two cockerels killed by a bobcat and two pullets killed by my own dog

. They still prefer to be out in the trees. We have to get them in before they want to roost for the night or we have to roust them from the trees, they're ten months old now and spent every night of their lives in a coop.
