As a first time chicken mom, and someone who has never been fond of birds as pets, I can't believe how much I'm enjoying these girls! And amazed at how smart and personable they are. Tonight I brought blueberries and some scratch out to the run. My Golden Comet Xena ADORES blueberries and is a real pig about them, even snatching them right out of the others' beaks! I gave her some blueberries by hand and pushed her aside so her flockmates could have a blueberry in peace, and she was fine with that. Then I held some scratch in my hand for them to peck at, and she pecked really hard and pinched my hand a little so I said Hey! Be Nice! - and she did. She ever so gently nibbled the grains in my hand after that, just like the other girls. Xena is the one who just started laying and she's 3 for 3 days so far, so she deserves blueberries and scratch and the other girls are definitely letting her have her way around the food now - but manners are manners when eating out of people's hands. I admit I was a bit surprised that she immediately understood and was so responsive to my scolding. They are all good girls, my white Polish pullet is a bit of a scatter brain but generally good natured. Such fun. My adult son collected today's egg from the nesting box and he was like "This is so cool!" Such a welcome and fun distraction these days!
