nipple drinkers.

I just got more in the mail yesterday. I ordered 45 for 25 bucks off of eBay. They sent 2 extras. I figured another week or two since they came from China, but they're already here and free shipping. I had to do it.

I ordered some back in August and have them in the coops, but I keep the regular waterers in there too. For a while I only used the buckets with the nipples but didn't feel the birds were getting enough water. I found limited success with the nipples, my younger flock use it only for emergency water when the regular waterer runs out of water or gets knocked over. My older flock they think it's a decoration in the coop, they've never figured it out! I find it is messy in the coop as it needs to have a drain pan under it to catch the drips the birds don't catch. I've been somewhat disappointed in them.

Nainaimo,
They peck at the pin and get a few drops of water. As others have stated they do have a propensity to leak, especially if the aren't completely vertical. I was somewhat satisfied with them but have since moved on to beak cups.

Yes, I like the look of these. Does the water just flow into them on gravity? Are they pricey or hard to install? Does it have to go onto a hose? One other question I have is whether or not to have water in the coop for overnight? I'd like to remove mine as it gets things soggy. Thanks for your help!

X2

My chickens prefer the one gallon fount waterer. I find I have to fill it everyday, but they were not drinking that much from the nipples. I am planning to get a bigger fount for them. There were 5 nipples in the package and we only used three. I am going to put one in a bottle to hang in the coop. Right now they do not have water in there. I let them out into the run at around 6 and they head right for the waterer.

I have the nipples set in buckets in all 3 of my pens! They use it fine and I refill them about every 3 days. I have 3 nipple on each 5 gallon bucket. Yes the ground underneath gets wet but it's not a major issue. I started using them around August and it was around 100 degrees outside. Didn't lose one bird to them not getting enough water!! I wouldn't go back to a regular waterer after using them!

Oh and you asked about the cups. I've never used them but I've heard they work great. They only difference is the price!!

You can mount the cups in tubing or also on the bottom of a bucket. They are more forgiving that nipples in that the don't have to be exactly vertical. You can also mount them in 2 different positions.
If you do a search on BellevueOlmlet's(sic) posts I believe he/she shows them in many different configurations. I think they also sell them although I got mine elsewhere.
