nipple waterers, bucket connection

What are those red hangy-down things?

I need to make some nipple waterers, now that warm weather has arrived.

The red hangy down things are cups that catch the water. They come in handy to teach the chickens to use the system. you can hit the nipples and fill the cups for them until they get the hang of it themselves.

You just need to gets some PVC, a few fittings, some glue, and go for it. I'll be happy to answer any qustions you have, heck I'd come over and help you out, but New York's on the other side of the continent.

They are refered to as "drip cups" in the industry.
They are used mostly on broiler breeder hens. They are designed to catch the drip and avoid getting the litter wet.
Broiler breeder hens are at times deprived of water and when the water comes back on they will mob the drinkers and cause a lot of wasteage.
Many hatching egg producers think they are a waste of time. I tend to agree.

Pacetruckguy and Neil, thank you for the info. I was looking at the pics and trying to figure out how in the world water went through those things, and where the birds would peck to get it out. Nice to know what the things actually are, and that I'm not just too dumb to figure it out!

OSUman, I looked at the nipples on the site you linked, that's the best price I've seen so far on just plain nipples, to build your own set-up. I haven't checked ebay yet. Or my local feed stores, but usually, if you can even find such things around here, they want twice as much for them. Thanks for the link!

Another helpful hint - Be sure to wrap the threds with teflon tape before screwing the nipples into the PVC. or use pipe dope, or put a bead of silicone around the fittings, or believe me they will leak. Another reason to put a coupler in before the nipple run, if you need to take it out to seal any leaks. Something I learned from trial and error.

If you go to Cackle Hatchery at cacklehatchery.com they have a nipple cup system that I have changed to. In the cups is a bright yellow valve the chickens peck at and the cup fills with water. You have to buy product # 4087 and # 4085, but they do offer free shipping. Look on their website under feeding an watering. I have found these to work well. But again seal the heck out of everything so they don't leak!
