Nipple waterers

My nipple waterers still make a mess; that is why they hang outside with bricks underneath to keep the ground from getting all muddy from the constant dripping from at least one nipple on each bucket, on and off.

Do your nipples look like this? Chicken nipples, that is.

I just ordered these - I hope they don't leak.

I don't remember what my nipples look like. I'll try to remember to look tomorrow. We ordered some higher flow silver colored nipples after our first summer, but I have no idea if they were ever installed or just left in the box.

They leak a little. Not giant streams. They will leak a drop usually after the hen takes a drink. And then a drip maybe once a minute on some of them. I have stood there and watched the drip slowly form on the tip of the nipple. Not all the nipples leak, so maybe you bought a few extra? I do know that just about every time I look, the bricks are wet under our two buckets with 4? nipples on the bottom of each bucket. It's enough leakage, though, that I do not want them inside the coop getting all the shavings and the floor wet.

I know, I know... but this almost made me spew my coffee....

I bought my chicken nipples from BYC member Neil Grassbaugh. He recommended the push-in style for bucket use. I followed the installation instructions he included. Mine do NOT leak. At all.

As for adding them to a heated bucket, that's going to depend on how it's heated and how thick the bucket is. You obviously wouldn't want to drill into a heating cable. I found directions online for building a heated hanging bucket. You basically wrap your bucket with pipe heating cable and then cover it with a second bucket (with the bottom cut out). I'm thinking seriously of doing this.

I have those and they don't leak unless a bit of dirt or something gets into them. Even then its a slow leak. I installed them into 1/2" pvc pipe with teflon tape and they work well. I did end up using some weird size drill bet 13/64 or something like that.

I have the same ones...they generally don't leak. However, I put silicone caulking around them on this inside and outside.

Thanks for breaking the ice. The way I asked my question, I wasn't sure if that reply was intentional (didn't want to get the moderator after me). My wife and I were howling about this last night.
Laughing with you Spangled, not at you

Thanks for the feedback.
And spangled, Yes - I ordered extra so hopefully I can get leak-proof enough to put one in the coop.

My husband was, though, when I read him the thread so that I could discuss chicken watering apparatuses with him. He does understand why I couldn't remember them, though, because he knows that my memory is going bad as I age.

I went out to the coop and looked underneath the hanging buckets and saw orange water releasers that looked like your photo. (I will never type the word "nipples" again!) My husband says that they are the screw in type. I can't remember where he purchased the orange water releasers.
