Nipple watering?

I can't pass this thread without giggling at the title. ....way too immature for this one.

Thanks Phoenix and woodsdweller!!! I will post pics when I get it all complete. Hopefully be done by the end of next week.

I've also thought about just putting the horizontal nipples into the side of the barrel and propping the barrel up on a sturdy platform and just putting it out in the middle of the run. Thoughts on this idea? Would prolly save some time that's for sure!

Yer welcome. Good luck with your project. By all means post pics.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. What works for some, makes others scratch their heads and say W*F?

Here's a walk-thru video that may help you easily accomplish that...

Have fun.

Thanks Phoenix! That's a very good video. I still can't make up my mind if I wanna run pvc lines or just put the nipples right into the barrel. But I'm leaning towards just going ahead with pvc lines because I really want them to be able to have access to water inside the coop as well as outside. And running two lines off the same barrel I can achieve both outdoor and indoor watering.

I have two trees that I think will end up with a board going across and hanging a 5gal bucket for water outside as well. I work swing shifts and my wife is always busy with the kids. So I'm trying to get us set up that we don't need to worry about food or water for a log period of time. Figured the more water locations the better!

I feel your pain, I have kids too. Wife doesn't do anything with the chickens but she likes the eggs.

Hope this visual will help you with your 5gal bucket setup:

We had been using the nipples on the water container in the brooder for our three week old chicks, but the water got everywhere! It seemed like they wasted so much. I'm afraid of using it in the coop/run b/c the ground will get muddy and draw Mosquitos. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about it. The ground gets damp, but if the nipples are spaced more than 12" apart, puddles shouldn't be a problem, unless you have really dense clay soil. Mosquitoes like standing water to lay their eggs. Damp spots... not so much.

Inside the brooder the bottle nipple waterers are hung over a lipped baking pan covered with 1/4" hardware cloth. When it gets really wet I just dump it, hose it down and return it.

I too am worried about moisture build up from the drips. So far the vertical one I have in my brooder isn't making a mess. They do spill some but they kick the pine shavings around so much it gets dried out very quickly. There has been no puddle at all. But once they go outside I'll have a new watering setup using horizontal nipples which shouldn't make any mess at all.

Don't kid yourself.

The horizontals will drip also.

One member had a bird get frostbite, and a foot stuck in the ice puddle one winter.

Here is my solution.

Any water that drips into the pizza pan, the birds drink.

Now my litter is totally dry.
