I showed last yr for the first time in chickens (I've shown everything from sheep to horses, dogs and cats) the one thing I really wish the judge would do is talk to the people while judging so we know what is wrong or right with our birds so we can make them better (not have the steward take you aside and say, yours is a mix so won't win or it's not the right color - yes I know, but how is it's type)
I took my chickens around to a few knowledgeable people to get some pointers after the class.

Most people are very helpful. Everyone was great when Sarah got started or she would not be where she is in her breeding program now. The Judges will explain to you why they didn't really care for that bird on that day, the bird may actually be fine, maybe just not showing well on that day or something else, do not be shy ask the Judges after what they thought and why, most will answer your questions. Lots of the Judges that Judge the Juniors will allow the Juniors to actually watch and ask questions while they are Judging depends on the Judge.

Sarah is only going to bring probably two to show and not sure what to sell, depends on what time I get out of work tonight and how much energy I have to sort through birds with her.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Sunday!!!

I too am Showing 3 Birds and will be selling. Hope to see you all,! It looks like its going to be a good Day and It will be Great to see everyone!

what happened last yr was people set up and those that had not had their birds tested, then had them blood tested and then you bring your bloodwork paperwork over to the sign up table for the show entry. if you have had them tested within 1 yr or they are the progeny of your tested birds and are under 1 yr, those do not need to be tested. I beleive the actual birds you are showing need to be tested as well.

Was a great show! Your Judge seemed quite talkative and helpful especially with what to look for. Gave me incentive to give it a go for next year. Still a bummer your serama pullet didn't get reserve....I guess there's always the next judge/show.
Whenever you want to sell some of her eggs/chicks, please let me know!
Happy Sunday

I'm back. I had a fabulous time. I'm glad this time I actually got to hear what the judge liked about my birds and I have to brag, our silkie took best silkie. My son showed in juniors for the first time and got 3rd. a great place to start.
I am very proud him. my blue lace red wyandotte, I am not displeased how she did, the judge told me he liked her but she needed some size and told me it's very hard to get with the patterned breeds. last yr I was just taken aside and told, your bird is not a qualifying color so won't win- now I know WHY it didn't win and what to work on.
sold all my chicks but one and I accidentally brought that one so didn't break my heart to bring it home.
can't wait for next weekend's swap.
