No bedding at all question

I don't want to constantly buy puppy pads/chux/shavings. They are NOT cleanable or reuseable. I just want to use WASHABLE LINERS. We tried it for the first time this morning. I put the fuzzy side upwards (to give the chicks tracktion and absorption) and the plastic side keeps the cardboard dry. We just took the dirty one out and power sprayed it off and it is drying in the sunshine now. I wonder how much $ you all spend on bedding??? I bought two 52 by 90 inch flannel-backed tablecloths for $3.00 each. I cut them in half and now have four liners to alternate. The box is 4.5 X 4. It held rolls of carpet at Lowes. It has a nice wire framework that held the carpet rolls up. Here is the finished brooder.

There is an incontinence DEPARTMENT at Walmart? Wow. Just wow.

Well, there's an AISLE for incontinence products.

But, back to bedding... if you use a nipple waterer, and practice the deep litter method in the brooder, what's wrong with pine shavings? You don't have to clean the brooder at all.... just scoop out the big pieces (and with chicks there aren't many of those!) and add new litter on top of the old. It stays dry. I would toss a small handful of shavings on a fresh, wet poop, and every few days add some more to the whole brooder. Eventually the layer of shavings is pretty deep, but it's NOT wet or nasty.
