Hello,
Dennis here, new to keeping chickens and although excited also overwhelmed.
Since deciding to do it, I am consumed with nothing else.
I have finally decided what coop I am getting and that has been the hardest decision so far. And also the most expensive. Not cheap to get a good predator safe setup. I live Rockland County NY and we are only allowed 6 hens which is about as many as I would choose to get anyway.
I have to have a slope in my yard leveled before I can get the coop/ run combo that chose and then I can get the birds I have chosen.
Any advice or ideas are welcome.
Thanks

Welcome! You now need to decide what type/color eggs you want and when you want them. For colored eggs, many people get Easter Eggers. The problem with them is they may make you wait 7 months before you get your first eggs. Actually, in NY you might be waiting until winter is over before you start to get eggs consistently if you start with chicks now. If you want eggs, you could look at getting grown birds. These are my preference unless you just really like rearing chicks.
We have a mix of standard and Bantams. Our family loves the bantams because they're little like my kids. Either way, picking a coop was far from the last or hardest decision that you had to make.

Thanks....I am planning to mix my flock as well. 3 standard and 2 bantams...possibly a 4th standard after I see how all will fit. I think I will have plenty off room in the coop...but want to make sure there is room enough in the run area.
