I just read on a really old thread about house chickens. My husband and I have been joking about making our new Silkie chick a house chicken but I didn't know that was actually something people did. How does that work? Tell me more...

(And if this is the wrong place to post, sorry, it was the best I could find!)

A lot of folks do not do this unless the chicken is I'll or hurt, to much dust! They put chicken diapers on them . Kind of gives me the creeps to have to change one of those ll. it's just not clean to have chickens in the house.

We have 31 chickens currently residing in our dining room. I would advise against it primarily because of the insane amount of dust.

Our neighbors had a house rooster. He would sleep with "H" and be let out to potty. He was completely house trained to go to the door when he needed to poop. He would fall asleep in their dad's recliner with him at night. Very special bird. :). I have no idea how they trained him.

My husband has taken a painfully long time to build the coop. He did not realize he would be gone so much for his new job. It's like I'm a single parent (with a paycheck) now! So we have some 6 week old chicks, some 3 week old chicks and some 2 week old chicks in the dining room in a 6x4 brooder. The 6 week olds escape all the time and walk around the house. We keep the bedroom doors closed (they have carpet) and when they have an "accident", we just clean it up. They don't even want to be outside! We put them out there and they stare into the house and peep like crazy until we bring them back in. Ah!

I have brought some in when ill. I only had chicks in for about 6-8 weeks, but then I could not keep up with the poo stench. With one I just clean the cage as soon as she goes. I never let a hen walk around the house.Shoot, I restricted the dogs!

If I were to consider house chickens, then think linoleum floor, drain, spigot, sprayable drywall, and no furniture in a room with lots of airflow coming from rest of house and leaving vent. Preference also to birds use such room mostly for roosting and being broody. Otherwise they be outside.

I was one of the original posters on the House Chicken thread. Our banty,Taco Belle, lived with us for many many years as a house chicken. She was hysterical, house trained, came when called, slept with the kids on their pillow next to their heads at night.

In her old age she became less house trained and I did make her fancy pants for those last couple of months.

We tried to house train one of our newer single chicks last year. She loved being indoors but didn't think about pooing outside at all and there was a huge difference between a house batty and a house LF hen. Banty . . . tiny poo, LF monstrous
