No Crow Rooster collar

Pics
We have had two NO Crow collars on as per the specifics mentioned in the packaging, this did take some adjusting but we got it right in the end, however both roosters became very withdrawn with the other quieter roosters now taking the ranks of alpha. They even eventually started to not come to eat when we were feeding the others and then one has even begun to fall over. Needless to say we are attempting to nurture this one back to health. We did switch up their diet also to some bread roles from the local bakery and food scraps but it seems to have only been the collared birds that are showing any sign of weakness. Any feedback on this that anyone may have would be greatly appreciated.

I was a major supporter of the no crow collar until yesterday. I was using it on my beautiful gold laced orpington roo. He was about 8 months old. The collar still allowed him to crow, it was just much less frequent and at a reduced volume. He was very used to wearing it and had it on for well over a month. I found him dead in the middle of the chicken yard yesterday. No signs of trauma. He had been well eating, drinking, and mating with his hens that morning. I feel pretty strongly that his death was directly related to the collar. I had gradually tightened it to the specifications of the manufacturer (the tip of my pinky finger could fit under it). I believe he ate something and was unable to swallow past the constriction this caused on his neck. Anecdotal, but I don't think I will be trying it on another roo.

Hi guys.. My neighbours have recently complained about our rooster and we've been given two weeks to find him another home. Is the No crow collar safe? I've been completely against it until I saw it on here. I trust this website more then any other. Are you 100% it doesn't hurt the rooster?

I have two friends who had problems while using it, even though they followed directions and are very experienced chicken owners. One lost her roo, as the poster above yours stated, the other found hers in distress, got the collar off, and he recovered. So it's a judgement call.

They certainly reduce volume. My head roo only took maybe 2 minutes to adjust to wearing one. He did give me a dirty look that I'm fairly sure was meant to convey a few 4-letter words but then went about his business. He has never acted as though it hurt in any way. Just the initial annoyance. I haven't had any safety concerns or issues in the past 3 months. Although, I would suggest an Australian company as an alternative. They sell their version of the No Crow called Cock Collars. You can google them. I've used both brands and much prefer the CC. Easier to put on, adjust, and even though it's shipped from AUS it's very cheap. I caught a sale they were having and got 4 collars for less than $20 shipping included.

I also keep an eye on him throughout the day. Like I said, I've never had a problem but I can't ignore the stories of when things went wrong with the NC. So better safe than sorry. Oh! And another thing I like about the CC over the NC is that it's elastic so there's stretch there if it gets caught on anything.

Sorry I rambled. Hope that helps in some way. Blooie is right. It comes down to a judgement call.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it! I'm so worried about Aidric (my rooster). But obviously, who wouldn't be aha! I hope he's okay :D

Interesting discussion about the rooster collar here on BYC. I started to ask a question about the rooster collar on another chicken forum because my rooster was too loud, but got an imediate reply that this was animal cruelty and a lock came on the question.
Therefore I brought my rooster back to the person I bought him as a young chick (should have been a pullet).

Now I have young chicks from natural breeding and of course there are a few young roosters in the group. One rooster can be spared from a sudden death if I can give him a collar when he starts to crow.

Can it be true that young roosters that get a collar at the first crow are not uncomfortable (because they don't know better)?

I am thinking to buy the australian type that seems to cause less trouble. Has anyone the experience with this crow collar and a sick or a death rooster?

I've read of several people that started putting collars on their roo before he crowed. Loose at first just to get him used to wearing one. Then slowly tightening to the proper spot. From what I understand, they still had the initial response to back away from it or shake it off but it didn't last very long.

Yes a lot of people are completely against the collars. But as far as I have ever seen, you really can't do anything with animals without a good chunk of people being horrified.

BEWARE!!! Watch your rooster carefully after putting the collar on!!!

I purchased this collar but after trying it for a week it's in the garbage. Because DeeDee pecked at the tag and I trimmed it off I wasn't allowed to return it to My Pet Chicken, between that, the restocking fee and shipping it wasn't worth the hassle to send back.

DeeDee became very distressed with the collar on, as I would imagine, but worked tirelessly to peck at it until it came off. I followed the directions carefully and even had someone else check that it was the right fit but DeeDee got it off every time! I tried it one last time and 5 minutes after putting it back on him he pecked at it and his beak got caught in the mesh, in a position that he could not close his mouth. Now I was distressed, so its in the trash.

I've heard you can use a baby sock, we'll see.
