No egg from my Black Cochin Bantam today?

She didn't lay an egg yesterday, and she still hasn't laid one today. It's 5:47PM here. Why hasn't she laid?

One of my RIR stopped laying about two weeks ago. She is happy and gets to free-range daily in our yard. She had just started laying about 2 weeks earlier. We have a few predators (fisher cats, racoons and skunks) that visit our area at night. I think she got spooked. Perhaps your girl is molting? I believe anytime after a year that can happen. Or broody? Sitting on everyone elses eggs?

It takes more than a 24 hour period for a hen to lay an egg. That's why you sometimes get eggs in the morning, during the day, or in the late afternoon. Sometimes hens take a day or two off from egg-laying duty.

Hens are not machines. All sorts of things affect egg laying. Hens don't necessarily lay an egg every day. Molting, cold or hot weather, stress, etc all can make a hen quit laying.

Yep, as long as she seems fine otherwise there is nothing to worry about just because she takes a few days off. I've had them stop for as much as a week for no reason that I could figure out and as others have mentioned, preds moving around at night, hot weather, etc. can put them on strike too.
