I have 2 chickens 1 about 3 and one about 1 and 1/2 years old

They laid fairly regularly-pretty much every day but sometimes the shells were a little weird-lined and thin in spots (sometimes the shells were too thin and they were crushed)

I fed them too much watermelon and canteloupe for awhile and they quit laying, but I stopped that and finally got about 4 more eggs from the oldest

Since then they havent laid anything for about 2 weeks-they have calcium chips fresh water and I am feeding them egg laying feed-I have seen a few (1-2 in 2 weeks) crushed very thin shells but that is it

I dont want to cull them because of course we are attached to them...

Any suggestions?

thanks!

It is the time of year for molting. This is probably the first sign of that coming on. Are they losing feathers? Your 1.5 year old will be soon, I predict. If you are concerned I would do a parasite check, but I expect it is molt onset. Time to skip the veggie and fruit scraps and start using seeds, nuts, cottage cheese, yogurt, bits of meat, any sources of protein. If they start dropping feathers they will need the protein boost to help them grow some new ones.

Good luck.

thank you
