No eggs for weeks

With colder temps and less daylight it's very normal for hens to slow way down or quit completely until spring. I have a speckled sussex that laid her first four eggs in August and then quit. She hasn't laid an egg since.

When we lived in SD, we had a flock of Buff Orps and they laid eggs for me all winter. We did put a heat lamp in their coop and I would feed them hot oatmeal every morning. BO's are cold hardy, too.

What type of chickens do you have?

Hey rooster0209... we haven't spoken in a long time. My girls have slowed down too, I went from an average of 12 a day to 4-5 and some days, nothing. I have heat lamps too. I'm thinking they might just be stressed from the long winter days and being cooped up for longer periods of time. Some days I wouldn't let them out at all especially when we were having 40- to 50- wind chills back in Dec.
How old are our girls? Mine are a year and half. I've heard they will slow down and/or stop after 3 years.

Lori

P.S. I have 1 girl, my Ameraucana, who hasn't laid for weeks either. She obvious because of of her blue/green egg.

Even in Georgia, I've gone from 8-10 eggs/day from my 10 girls to 4-6 per day. It's not that cold here (low 20s at night at the worst, usually 40s-50s during the day) and they go outside every day, but I don't have a light in the coop. Yes, there's less daylight this time of year, but I think it's also partly due to the fact that there's much less foraging-type food available for them. I feed them fresh herbs and veggies when I can, but it's not the same as having lots of grass and bugs to eat all day long in the summer.

How is the weather in MT, mttroutw/wings? I havn't seen you on much lately.

Its cold, windy and nasty hear today, except if you look out and dont pay attention to the wind, its bright and sunny.

The birds are 7-8 months, mixed breeds from some free eggs I hatched early last spring.

I just took them some spaghetti that was in the fridge, who knew chickens loved pasta & tomatoes w/ Itallian seasoning

Well I maybe got 5 eggs from October til the last of December and now we are laying like crazy and molting! Good luck with your flock!
