Hopefully someone out there may know what is going on. About a month ago, I tried hatching some chicken and duck eggs in the incubator. Most of the chicken eggs hatched, and out of dozen duck eggs, only 2 hatched. Some of the other were moving around, started pipping, but then died. When I cracked, the shells open, we learned the yolk sacs were not fully absorbed.
So...outside, I had one duck and one chicken sitting side by side on their eggs. When the time had come for their eggs to hatch, I found only one dead baby chicken. A bunch of broken open egg shells. Found out later that the birds were crushing their eggs. So, brought the rest of the eggs to the incubator. Turned out the eggs were rotten, as in pure, liquid rotten, nasty.... Blah.
One of my ducks has been sitting on a nest for some time. Started with quite a few duck eggs. 4-5 days ago, I heard at least one egg moving, with pipping. No babies, even to this day. There are even fewer duck eggs then started with. When momma duck was up, quickly candled eggs, again, got rotten eggs. Found the cracked eggs, from the chick that tried to hatch. But out of all the eggs, only 3 'looked' like they may be fertilized.
I think my chickens may be eating the eggs, first off, as like I said, there were almost no duck eggs left, and there were a bunch of chicken eggs layer there. But, why are all my eggs rotting. Every time I go to feed, water the ducks are laying, it seems like they never move. I am becoming very discouraged.
For feed, they get purina, flock raiser crumble and Layena pellets. They also get oyster shells. Obviously they get fresh water.
Thanks
Jessica
