It's VERY normal. Twenty weeks old (which would be five months) is a general rule of thumb. It varies with the breed and the individual chicken. I have all one breed and it's a late maturing breed. Some of the girls started laying at about five months, others not until 9 plus months and all are normal.

I have six month old RIR and they still aren't laying. Healthy, happy but no eggs! Don't feel bad they will come when they come.

I have six that are 25 weeks 2 days. Got my first egg yesterday. No one else looks ready. Try not to worry. It will happen. I've heard the longer it takes, the better for the bird if that is any consolation.
