You shouldn't have a hole in your coop big enough for a cat to fit through. Cats can't fit anywhere. They aren't nearly as agile as a mink or weasel. So securing your coop situation is a must.

On the molting, chickens almost never molt at the same time. i have never ever had all my chickens molt at the same time. It is generally only one. So that isn't a concern at all.

Several of my girls have the same situation. I have one who's had a bald behind for a couple months now but within the last few days, I've noticed three other's who have been missing the feathers near thier tales...figured it was from the rooster. And now several of them also have bald bottoms (bottome being vent area all the way under the belly. ) I put DE out once a week for them and dust the nesting boxes as well. DE will work on the mites if that is indeed the case you are faced with.

Are they crowded? I have a small hen that tries to bury herself under all the other hens and ends up getting pecked up alot. She has few feathers while the rest look pretty good. Just wondering as this may help. Sometimes stress will also make them molt out.

Yankee, don`t stress out on this minor subject. Enchanted is correct about chickens hardly ever moulting at the same time. Also, I said "Sometimes fowl moult really fast, like overnight fast, and sometimes it`s so slow that you can hardly tell it." When some moult you can`t tell it. The only clue is loose feathers in the run. They will moult when it`s time, and if it happens to be in the dead of winter, still no need to worry.........Pop

I know Lolipop , but she keeps losing them, MAJORLY! this morning she is Almost bald on her neck, and her feathers keep getting lost!
Again i don't think it's a mite because they sleep huddled, and mites spread!
I dusted them yesterday, just in case, but

I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO DO:idunno

Here`s a clue for ya. Don`t do anything. Some birds lose almost all of their feathers OVERNIGHT, or so it seems. They may even get to that "Almost bald" stage, but this is normal for some. If ya ask me, it`s good that she is doing this now, before the cold weather sets in. Some birds molt in the dead of winter, as I said. Give her a little added protein and don`t overdo it. Three to 4 morsels of dry catfood will help her feather growth, but only a couple times a week. You can crush up half a boiled egg and give it to her instead. Moulting is a very stressfull time for some birds. Leave her alone to recover. Above all else, get a hold of yourself. You sound like you`re falling apart. Somebody has to be rational enough to feed your babies.........P
