Help!
We got back from the feed store a little bit ago where we picked up some 5 day old chicks.
I asked the owner for a 25 lb bag of chick feed and while he was ringing me up had a store clerk bring a bag from out back and put it in my car.
Well I get home and unpack the chicks and get them all settled, I go get the bag of feed and its a bag of grass seed!!!!
I called the store and they are closed.
What should I do for food until tomorrow morning when the store opens?

Oh gosh I don't know. I would at least say get them some water with maybe a bit of sugar or vitamin in them. Do you know of anyone in your area, neighbor, friend who could give you something? In all reality, I'm sure they will be fine till the a.m.

Good luck.

Maybe some scrambled egg? I know it is one of the things fed to young chicks if you need to increase their intake. And, the egg yolks are what they fed on initially anyway.

I would give them sugar water for now, rather than trying to find something around the house that might give them the runs or impaction. Then go first thing in the am and get feed, cuz they will be hungry! The sugar water will give them energy and get them through the night. Keeping them hydrated is much more important than being hungry for a few hours (remember, with some heavy breeds, they suggest taking the feed away at night)

My mom had chickens growing-up and she used to feed them hard boiled eggs, finely chopped. This was before they had special chick feed. They were all happy and healthy.

Good luck!

I think a little uncooked oatmeal (quick oats or regular oatmeal). Maybe a little cornmeal. I've been told old timers used to feed this. Maybe even a small amount of cooked oatmeal. I think the mashed boiled egg is good too. They shouldn't need a lot until tomorrow. Maybe just feed small bits every couple of hours.

Thanks to all who replied to my post.
I am so stressed out over this.I had everything ready for them (they have a pretty sweet little set up) and I figured I would just get the food when I picked them up.
UUGGHH!
I was worried that they would be stressed with their new surroundings as well and now they don't even have any food.
I have no idea when the feed store fed them last.
There were soooo many chicks in their cage.
I don't have any neighbors that have feed, I am apparently the only crazy chicken person in the area.
I will do the sugar water and keep my fingers crossed, they all look pretty hearty except my fuzzy little Americana.
That one looks soooo delicate.

Oatmeal and eggs, great ideas!
I will try that as well, if its only for tonight then it should do no harm and then I will get the chick starter first thing in the morning.
Thank you, I feel so much better.

i start all my babies on boiled eggs minced up in a food processor.spinkle it and a little starter on the white paper towels in the brooder.for whatever reason the yellow egg seems to really get them pecking around......i continue giving them small portions of egg as they grow but more as a treat than anything.....
