Coming home from taking the cats to the vet for their vaccinations my husband had to brake hard because an animal was about to run in front of him. It stopped and we got a good look at what we think was a coyote. It was 4:30 in the afternoon and it didn't look as lanky as what I think a coyote looks like but I've been looking at pictures of coyotes spotted in CT and it looked more like that anything else. Definitely bigger than a fox and I've only seen red fox around here. I suppose it could have been a coyote dog cross. DH and I agree it didn't move or look like a domestic animal at all. I've only seen coyotes in CT once before and it was a long time ago, and that was a dark night on a street with little light. Hard to compare. We wondered about it being out that early in the day but the CT DEP website says they will come out early especially this time of year, if they have young to feed. Great.....
The worst part was that we were barely a mile from our house. I know they're out there but it's still shocking to see one that close to home!

Coyotes are all over New England, there's plenty of them around here, and it's a fairly populated area. Just a few weeks ago I heard one howling that classic coyote howl in the middle of the night, at the full moon, at our home up in Maine. Woke me up out of a sound sleep!

I know they eat chickens (what doesn't?

) but when they're around here, I have no problems with woodchucks. The coop we built will withstand anything, it's the run I worry about, we'll see how secure it is!

Coyotes are supposedly all over the US. I've also heard that some cross breeding with feral dogs has occured.

I've never seen one but my daughter did last year...and according to my neighbors they are all around.

I would love to see one in the wild but also am concerned about my pets - all of them. There are also bobcats around. I've only seen one and it was dead on the road.

If you spotted one a mile away from your home, you can bet they've been on your property already.

There are lots of animals lurking about that we never see, but just because we haven't seen them doesn't mean they aren't there.

I've lived here 19 years and we've heard them but never seen them. We've now got bobcats in this area too.
As for having been in the yard, I'm sure they've been close. I'm hoping the fenced in yard and the smell of my dogs helps to deter them some. I won't count on it to keep my birds safe but I'm hoping it slows them down and they choose to go elsewhere!
It was beautiful, I'll say that much.

We have pretty large packs of coyotes in our area, and they have come right up my property, and run down my driveway, in a huge pack, just yipping and yapping....my DH is terrified of them! So far they have not dared to enter my pet area - and its been 9 years now. They've just run right through in the dark...so far......maybe even if a coyote gets close to your home, it wont be brave enough to enter your "space"...they're pretty leary of humans and the human threat.

Our friends who live across town have three sheep. The coyotes have a well worn path between the electric fence and the neighbors' yard from the woods on one side of the street to the woods on the other side. They can sit on their back porch and watch them go by every night. But they seem to respect that fence!

Was the tail tucked or pointed straight down? Coyotes don't carry their tails in the air like a domestic dog does. We have coyotes run through our area during the day. It is a scary thought, but the bigger our cities and counties grow, the less amount of room our wildlife has to live in. I think this sort of thing will become more and more common the bigger our world gets.

I keep my cats inside for many reasons, coyotes and fox being one. We just had them get out on us two weeks ago for the first time. My timid little Molly was out there for 2 days (and nights) before she came home. We were sure she was gone. Nope, probably just hiding so well we couldn't find her and terrified to come out. She came home at 3:30 am the second night.
