no NPIP in Hawaii!?

I'm kinda thinking it doesn't. If the disease can travel as a hitchhiker on the bodies/clothing/shoes of people around the mainland, it can certainly get itself over to Hawaii. Hawaii also allows imports and there is the possibility that infected imports of eggs or live fowl can carry it. Of course I could be wrong but it seems to me that the opportunity exists.

How crazy is it that Hawaii, who is so strict about importing birds, does not participate in the NPIP program?
I was thinking..."ok I am gonna get all legit and find out about this NPIP thing". It looks like you are a serious person when the NPIP cert if proudly displayed. I called the department of agriculture and we have no such thing as NPIP here.

So typical of Hawaii.
Hi Hello, I'm interesting in becoming NPIP in the future. I know this post is old but thank God there's others who asked the question about this for Hawaii. Just wanted to ask, is hawaii now participating in NPIP? Cuz i'm think they are now?. Please confirm. Thanks.

Reviving this old thread... I don't think HI participates in the NPIP program still. I can't find any info on it. If anyone knows if that's changed, please let us on this thread know.

This is an old thread. My information on Hawaii is out of date also but I'm not going to do the research to update it.

NPIP is a federal government program that worked. It was set up to combat a specific disease (pullorum) that was threatening the commercial chicken operations in the US. Now that threat is pretty very low, mainly due to NPIP. The federal government had specific requirements for a state to participate, mainly around pullorum. Each state set up their own requirements for their own program. Some went with the minimum, some went further and included other diseases or requirements. So each state is different. The federal NPIP requirements are not much, really.

The last I heard 48 states were participating in NPIP. Hawaii was not, I cannot remember which was the other state. Hawaii is uniquely positioned among the states, being as isolated as it is. My understanding is that Hawaii's import requirements are so much more strict that the minor requirements of the federal that it did not make sense to them to join. I don't know the details of why, you'd think they'd incorporate the details to qualify for federal assistance into their program so they got the money and then take the extra steps they think they need because Hawaii is so unique. But I'm not doing that research.

Call your county extension office and chat with them about it. They should be able to help you determine what is actually included in Hawaii's requirements.
